Torrey Pines: Phil comes up short in 2011 season opener

In the first tournament of his 2011 PGA Tour campaign, Phil Mickelson showed no signs of rust as he finished in solo second, only one shot behind tournament winner Bubba Watson. Mickelson tried to force a play-off when he teamed up with caddy Jim McCay in spectacular fashion and almost holed out from the fairway on his 72nd hole.

Its always nice to start the season in your hometown, with a tie for the lead in the final round and Amy and Mary walking the course with you.  However, in what I would call a bit of an upset, after a great round of 69, it just wasn’t quite enough to beat Bubba Watson, who stayed strong with his head down amongst all the Phil Fans and finished with a great score of 67 to win the Farmer’s Open.

Mickelson and McCay teamed up in spectacular fashion on the 72nd hole of the 2011 Farmers Insurance Open

Phil said even with the wind and somewhat difficult conditions, he thought something in the 60s would have done it for him.  But of course in true Phil Fashion, it came down to the wire with one last shot 72 yards out on the par 5 18th – if he holed it in would set up the playoff.  And as everyone held their breath (come on, you know you did!), it fell short 2 feet from the hole.  Even in light of the outcome, that was good golf!  And if this is only the beginning of the season, I am very excited to see what happens in Phoenix next week!

Even though not the 50th career win yet, 4 rounds in the 60s is something great to start the season with also.  Abu Dahbi was a nice warm-up and now next week at the Waste Management Open, it’s a clean slate again to work on the next Thrill Ride with Phil.  Rumors have it he’ll be paired with Bubba again and Bill Haas (co-leader in round 4 of  Farmers) and again, going back to a familiar place with TONS of Phil Fans to cheer him on we can look forward to another great weekend with plenty of new (and not so new) challengers that will test our guy’s determination and skills to achieve that #1 spot we all know he should have had long ago.  We are there for you Phil – Go Get ‘Em!
